UT Austin Restricted Wireless with Linux NetworkManager

UT Austin currently has command line instructions on how to use their secured wireless network through wpa_supplicant. That’s all well and good if you’re a computer science student using Gentoo with some time to kill, but suppose you are a person with a laptop who wants to go on the web. It is easy to do with the NetworkManager GUI:

  1. Save the UTexas pem to your certificates folder. Do this however you wish; I find it easy to just type this command:
    sudo wget https://management.pna.utexas.edu/static/faqs/dot1x/cacerts.pem -O /etc/ssl/certs/utexas.pem
  2. Click on the NetworkManager tray icon, and click “Connect to other wireless network.” Enter the information as pictured below, changing the pictured username and password to your UT EID and password:

  3. Click connect and that should do ‘er. Take a visit to purple.com on your new connection, why not?
