Wireless Linux at Lehigh University

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

I tried for a few days to get Lehigh’s 8021X authentication to work with my wireless setup, but the wireless network kept disassociating before the handshake finished. I asked around and a bunch of people said that Ashutosh’s instructions worked perfectly. I tried them verbatim, except without ndiswrapper (yuck!) The Intel iwlwifi driver has been [...]

UT Austin Restricted Wireless with Linux NetworkManager

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

UT Austin currently has command line instructions on how to use their secured wireless network through wpa_supplicant. That’s all well and good if you’re a computer science student using Gentoo with some time to kill, but suppose you are a person with a laptop who wants to go on the web. It is easy to [...]

Script Bash para solucionar Realtek r8168 en Ubuntu Hardy (Español)

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

Script to Fix R8168 in Ubuntu Hardy

Monday, May 5th, 2008

The Realtek r8168 network card does not work out of the box in Hardy. modprobe loads the r8169 module. A solution is to use a patched version of the r8168 driver provided by Realtek.

Salmon and Hardy

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

Wulp, my new laptop is here and it is quite a sweet piece of equipment. Her name is salmon.jamesonwilliams.com (the color, not the fish.) It shipped with Vista, which I played around with for a few days - and I have to say, it is a fairly nice looking piece of software. But my fun [...]

New Vostro 1310 Laptop

Friday, April 18th, 2008

My old laptop, a Compaq nx 9010, was old and weak, but then it also became stolen, too. So, I’ve put in an order for a Dell Vostro 1310.

(Photo taken from PC Magazine.)
Why This?
Most laptops are ugly. To get something café-worthy, my options appeared either to be the MacBook, a Vostro, or a Thinkpad. Thinkpads [...]

Starting a Blog
It is customary for young men and women to establish blogging utilities upon studying abroad in Europe. Rest assured, I will be no exception to this custom. As such, I have created jamesonwilliams.com/oxford - which you are now visiting! (Note: this has now been moved to jamesonwilliams.com/blog.)
Some Notes on Europe
I spent most of [...]

Summer 2007

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

I haven’t posted on here in a while, and it is still up on the web, so why not, right. This summer I wake up at 7:30, take the 66 bus from Brookline, MA to Harvard Square, then the red line to Alewife, then the 351 express bus to Burlington each weekday. I get to [...]

XHTML or HTML5? Summary of XHTML’s Current State

Saturday, June 10th, 2006

A look at the various problems and benefits of XHTML. The article makes a case for using XHTML as opposed to HTML4 as advocated by some developers. The article includes a discussion of W3C’s recommendations and how realistic they are to implement at this point.
W3 Says XHTML.
That’s a pretty half-baked reason to chose one over [...]
