Personal Computing
This page is concerned with hardware and software for personal computing. For server usage, see my page on server computing (not written yet.)
After having used nLite modified versions of Windows XP SP2 Corporate with ported Linux software on my desktop for a number of years, I finally switched completely to GNU/Linux in 2006. I have mostly used Fedora, and Ubuntu on my laptop.
Here’s a screen shot of the screen selector on my GNOME-based compiz-fusion desktop on my laptop (navy.jamesonwilliams.com):
I primarily use the the Bourne Again and Z Shells on the Linux CLI, along with the following software:
- Pidgin and Xchat chat clients
- Firefox and Lynx web browsers
- Thunderbird email client
- Python command-line for problem solving
- VI Enhanced text editor
- GIMP image manipulation program
- Openoffice.org to view Office files
- VLC Player and Rythmbox to watch movies and listen to music.
